Drunk Driver Injured Three Winter Park Construction Workers
Winter Park police report that a witness helped them track down and arrest a suspect who drove his car into three construction workers and drove away from the accident scene. Police investigators say that they strongly suspect that the suspect was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident and are waiting for toxicology reports before charging the suspect with felony DUI and other charges. Police report that the accident occurred around 11 p.m. on Fairbanks Avenue near Rollins College.
Officers say that Eric Olson, who was driving the car behind the suspect, saw the suspect strike the workers and then drive off. Olson quickly wrote down the suspect’s license plate number and followed him for a quarter of a mile down Fairbanks Avenue before he stopped.
"He had no clue what he had done," Olson said. "He got out of the car and asked me what happened and I had to explain to him that he had just hit somebody on the road."
Police say that one of the injured workers lost two fingers in the accident, one of which was found in the doorjam of the suspect’s car. The other was found on the road at the accident scene. He was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where is listed in serious condition. The other two injured workers were taken to Winter Park Memorial Hospital, where they are being treated for undisclosed injuries. Their condition has not been released.
The suspect told investigating officers that he had two rum and Cokes and two waters with dinner over a two to three-hour period at a nearby restaurant. Police are interviewing servers and other workers at the restaurant to determine if the suspect’s claims are accurate. He refused to perform field sobriety tests and provide a breath sample when he was apprehended shortly after the accident.
