Crane & Rigging Equipment Collapse Cuts Baldwin Park Home in Two
A family in Baldwin Park received a terrifying and unpleasant shock on Tuesday, September 4th, around 1:00 in the afternoon, when a large construction crane collapsed on the roof, cutting much of the home into two pieces. According to reports from the Gold Key Roofing company’s manager, the company had been hired to replace the shingles on the roof of the home. Due to the height of the home, Gold Key Roofing hired a subcontractor, Beyel Brothers Crane & Rigging, to help lift the new singles from the ground level area to the roof itself.
What exactly occurred is not immediately clear. There is footage taken from what appears to be a doorbell camera located near to the area that shows the tall crane standing next to the building before something happens to cause it to rock violently. Directly afterwards, the large crane arm falls, slicing the building in half.
The home, located along Lower Park Road, was not occupied at the time of the incident. A woman who lives there as well as her two children are believed to have been returning from school when the accident took place, a fact which very possibly prevented anyone from experiencing catastrophic injuries. Sometime after the accident happened, the woman and the children returned to the location. They were allowed to enter the structure in order to retrieve certain possessions from the first floor of the home, but were strongly advised to abstain from entering any other parts of the building.
It took over six hours before the crane was able to be successfully removed from the building. Members of the Orlando Fire Department were on hand to assist in this process and they shut down the nearby road in order to ensure that the crews lifting the crane could do so unencumbered by additional traffic.
Beyel Brothers Crane & Rigging, the company that was operating the crane, has not responded to news agencies requesting comments relating to the incident. According to numerous reports available online, this company has a history of improper equipment maintenance and poor employee treatment practices. It is believed that a police investigation is underway in order to determine what happened, who was responsible, and what, if any, repercussions should face Beyel Brothers.
