St. Pete Pedestrian Severely Injured During Accident with PSTA Bus
Authorities with the St. Petersburg Police Department are currently investigating an accident involving a city bus that seriously injured a pedestrian early Wednesday morning on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street.
According to initial auto accident reports from members of the St. Petersburg Police Department, it was shortly before 10:30 a.m. on February 1, 2023, when a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) bus was travelling in the westbound direction of 1st Avenue North near downtown St. Petersburg. At this same time, 58-year-old pedestrian Denise Rozwarski was waiting on the sidewalk close to the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street and 1st Avenue North.
Officers indicate that as the PSTA city bus approached the upcoming intersection to turn left onto Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street, the 58-year-old pedestrian stepped into the street and was struck by the bus. She was not within a designated crosswalk area when the collision occurred.
Officials with the St. Petersburg Police Department and emergency response teams with the St. Petersburg Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene of the bus vs. pedestrian accident and immediately started to extricate the seriously-injured woman, who was trapped underneath the bus. She was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg to receive treatment for life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the PSTA bus was unharmed during the collision and there were no passengers onboard when the crash took place.
No further updates have been released to the public.
Unfortunately, accidents such as these occur far too often and can be difficult to decipher, especially given the current condition of the victim, whose statement will play a key role in the case. Thankfully, city buses such as these are typically equipped with a dash cam to record movement from inside the vehicle, as well as the immediate exterior of the bus. Hopefully this footage will shed light on this delicate subject matter.
