Port Orange Cyclist Killed in New Year’s Eve Crash

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on January 6, 2021

It was on the evening of New Year’s Day that police were called to the scene of an accident between a car and a bicycle that took place at the intersection of Village Trail and Dunlawton Avenue in Port Orange. According to the Port Orange Police Department, the incident that they were there to investigate had taken place only a short time earlier, when the cyclist was either attempting to cross the intersection or was traveling near the roadway when they reached the intersection in question.

At the same time as the cyclist was traveling down the road, a vehicle being driven by a person who was not named or described approached this same meeting of streets. The driver of this car was either unaware of the cyclist, or perhaps the cyclist suddenly entered the travel lane and the driver did not have enough time to avoid striking them. Either way, the car collided with the bicycle while still traveling at considerable speed, knocking the biker onto the ground and inflicting severe injuries upon the individual.

The driver of the car did the right thing after this: they stopped. They remained at the scene, providing the cyclist with what care that they could while waiting for emergency response crews to reach the area. When the paramedics and EMTs arrived, the driver of the car stepped back and the medical teams took over. The cyclist was badly injured as a result of the collision, but they were still alive when the medical teams began to tend to them. The cyclist was carefully placed into an ambulance and then transported from the scene of the crash to a nearby hospital. An unknown amount of time after arriving at the hospital, the cyclist, who remains unnamed while the authorities attempt to contact any family or next of kin, was declared deceased.

The driver of the vehicle cooperated with the investigating authorities throughout the entire first phase of the investigation, and at the time of this writing there are no charges currently pending against this individual. The Port Orange Police Department is currently asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to reach out with this information.
