Local Bicyclist Severely Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident in The Villages
Law enforcement agencies and investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) operating within The Villages are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the driver of a silver 2003 Jaguar whom they believe was involved in a serious hit-and-run bicycle accident along Hillsborough Trail near Shale Trail Loop early Tuesday morning.
At approximately 6:50 a.m. on November 3rd, 2020, 61-year-old Ken Nevers was riding his bicycle within the golf cart lane of Hillsborough Trail close to the Manatee Pool and Recreation Center when the Village of Fenney resident noticed a silver 2003 Jaguar quickly approaching his position from behind. For reasons that are currently unknown, the driver of the Jaguar increased their rate of speed, crashed into the rear-end of the bicyclist, and immediately fled the scene of the accident. “The driver accelerated and mowed me down. I was right up against the curb and had no escape. I was told my head bounced off the windshield, splitting my helmet in half, as I rolled off the drivers side hood onto the pavement. The driver accelerated and never looked back,” he said in statement to authorities. The victim also indicated that he believed the driver was possibly distracted by their cell phone.
Although the victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, he sustained serious injuries including a separated shoulder, a broken rib, and other many cuts and contusions that required a multitude of stitches. Thankfully, a keen-eyed witness who happened to be in the area at the time of the hit-and-run crash quickly made note of the vehicle’s make, model, and most importantly, its license plate number. According to the FHP, the public should be on the lookout for a silver 2003 Jaguar with Florida plate number NWQG97. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the toll-free Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
