Cyclist Badly Injured in Crash with SUV in Sumter County Roundabout
Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol working within Sumter County have shed some light on an incident that took place towards the middle of July and resulted in the injury of a single individual who was riding a bicycle at the time. According to these reports, two individuals, both of whom were over 60, were involved in the incident that happened in a traffic circle along Buena Vista Boulevard.
As mentioned already, one of the individuals, a 66-year-old, was riding a bicycle. It is not clear whether this person was initially riding down Buena Vista Boulevard or one of the other roads that intersected with the traffic circle, but we do know that they were riding along the innermost lane of the traffic circle at the time that another person, a 69-year-old woman, entered the circle off of the westbound lane of Pinellas Place.
After entering the traffic circle via the circle’s outermost lane, the 69-year-old decided to turn the wheel on their SUV in order to transfer to the innermost lane, which is where the cyclist was still traveling. It appears that the 69-year-old didn’t see the bicyclist at the time that they decided to change lanes, a factor which then resulted in them colliding with the cyclist while still traveling at a fairly advanced rate of speed. The cyclist, who was fortunately wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was thrown from their bike and into the roadway. Fortunately, there were either no other cars in the circle at the time or the other drivers were aware enough to avoid the prone cyclist in the immediate aftermath of the collision.
When the emergency response crews reached the area, they rushed to assist the badly hurt cyclist. After doing what they could at the location itself, the EMTs and paramedics transported the individual to a nearby hospital in an ambulance. It is believed that the individual was able to be treated at the medical center, although the full extent of his injuries was not included in the initial report.
At the time of this writing, it remains unclear whether or not any charges are pending against the driver of the SUV.
