One Dead, One Injured in Crash During Midway Police Chase

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on March 30, 2016

Around 4:00 pm on Thursday, February 18th, 2016, a police chase in Midway, Florida sadly ended in a crash that took one life and severely injured another individual. The chase ended when the vehicle crashed in a residential neighborhood located near the intersection of Hilltop Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Police from both Midway Police Department and the Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office initiated the pursuit when they learned the vehicle in question had been stolen. The driver, 19-year-old Malik Dwayne Saunders from Pensacola, fled from police when he realized he was being followed. During the chase, Saunders’ vehicle spun out, left the roadway, and smashed into a brick mailbox. The vehicle then continued further off the road, going over two culvert ditches and flipping over. When the vehicle finally stopped at the shoulder of Martin Luther King Boulevard, it had flipped back over onto its tires.

As a result of the traumatic accident, Saunders was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. His passenger, 18-year-old Trevor Chambers from Havana, FL, survived, but was hospitalized with severe injuries. No further information has been provided as to Chambers’ current state of health.

The Florida Highway Patrol have been investigating the case, but no additional details have been released since the accident occurred. It is not yet clear whether the passenger was a party to the theft of the vehicle, or whether any charges will be brought against him as a result.
