Elementary School Teacher Killed During St. Petersburg Crosswalk Accident
A Manatee County community is mourning the loss of one of their own this week after a beloved elementary school teacher passed away from injuries sustained in a pedestrian accident last Saturday evening in St. Petersburg.
According to reports from officers with the St. Petersburg Police Department, it was close to 6:30 p.m. on June 3, 2023, when 54-year-old Jeffrey Wilson was walking within the designated crosswalk near 3rd Street North and Central Avenue with his 56-year-old wife Ariane and their adult daughter Emily. As the family crossed the street, a Nissan Rogue approached from the westbound direction of Central Avenue, turned through the intersection, and struck two of the pedestrians with their vehicle.
Pinellas County emergency response teams and authorities with the St. Petersburg Police Department were immediately dispatched to the scene of the crosswalk accident and transported both Ariane Wilson and Jeffrey Wilson to the nearest trauma center. Mrs. Wilson received treatment for broken ribs and a shoulder injury and has since been released from the hospital. Her husband’s condition, however, was much worse than it was initially believed to be and he was removed from life support services on Tuesday.
The driver of the Nissan Rogue remained at the scene of the fatal auto accident and was in full cooperation with the St. Petersburg Police Department.
Both victims of this pedestrian accident are educators at Freedom Elementary School in Bradenton. Mrs. Wilson is a kindergarten teacher, while Mr. Wilson taught physical education.
“The School District of Manatee County mourns the loss of Freedom Elementary School Physical Education Teacher Jeffrey Wilson. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the Wilson family and the Freedom Elementary School community,” said the Manatee County School District in a press release.
This deadly collision is currently under investigation by the St. Petersburg Police Department. No formal charges have been filed at this time.
