Car Crash in Orlando Kills 18-Year-Old High School Quarterback
The family and friends of an East River High School varsity quarterback are mourning the loss of their young loved one this week after he was tragically struck by a vehicle while helping a stranded motorist last Sunday morning on Dallas Boulevard in Orlando.
As the heartfelt condolences continue to pour in from around the community, authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Orlando are still working to determine the chain of events that led to the car crash and subsequent death of 18-year-old Nick Miner on October 23, 2022.
Preliminary investigations by troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that it was close to 1 a.m. when 18-year-old Nick Miner was behind the wheel of a Ford F-150 and driving down Dallas Boulevard. As the teenager approached the area near Oberly Drive, he pulled his pickup over to the side of the road in order to help a friend whose vehicle had suffered a malfunction and was stuck in a ditch. The two drivers attached a large rope between the vehicles and while they were attempting to tow the disabled vehicle, a 27-year-old woman driving a Honda Insight slammed into Miner’s truck. The force from the impact of the collision caused the young man’s Ford to flip over several times, ejecting Miner from the driver’s seat of the vehicle.
Officials in Orange County and officers with the Florida Highway Patrol arrived at the scene of the auto accident within a matter of minutes, but despite their best efforts, 18-year-old Nick Miner sadly succumbed to his severe injuries and passed away. Although their relation to the victim or the collision has yet to be determined, two pedestrians, a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old woman, were also seriously injured during the crash and were transported to a local hospital.
Grief counselors for the students and staff of East River High School have been retained and remain onsite for anyone who needs help dealing with this tragic accident. “I know I speak for our entire East River High community when I express the grief felt at the loss of one of our own,” said East River High School Principal Becky Watson in a statement to local media outlets. A GoFundMe account has been created in order to assist the family with medical bills and funeral costs.
This fatal auto accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. At the time of this writing, charges are pending against the 27-year-old driver of the Honda Insight.
