One Injured After Zoo Train Overturns in Sanford

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 13, 2019

A visitor to the Central Florida Zoo located in the city of Sanford was injured on Monday, November 25th, after the mini train on which they were riding became derailed and rolled off of the tracks. Initial reports from the zoo itself stated that the train was traveling along its prescribed route close to 1:00 in the afternoon when, for reasons that are currently under investigation, it suddenly stopped. This abrupt action resulted in the car at the tail end of the train to jump off of the tracks and roll over.

Immediately after this took place, numerous guests immediately called 9-1-1. It is believed that these calls happened as a result of at least one person being noticeably injured after the car rolled off the track, although it is not clear if this person was inside of the train at the time or if they were perhaps standing near the train when the car suddenly rolled on top of them.

The Central Florida Zoo provided reporters with the information that both the train and the tracks on which it rides are inspected each day by zoo staff. Additionally, the train and track receive a lengthy inspection two times a year as part of requirements from the state regarding amusement rides. The zoo stated that neither the daily inspection nor the bi-annual inspection – which took place on the 20th of November – resulted in reports of any anomalies relating to the train or the train tracks.

That being said, it is not clear then just what could have caused the incident that resulted in the injury.

The injured individual was transported from the scene of the incident to a nearby hospital, although the reports did not include any mention of just how severe the injuries sustained by this person are believed to be.

At the time of this writing, it is not clear if the train has reopened or if it remains closed as a part of the investigation into its operation. We do know that following the accident, the train was inactive for a period of time while the initial investigation took place.
