Woman Struck and Killed in Orlando Pedestrian Accident
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers have arrested one driver and are looking for another in connection with a recent fatal pedestrian accident in Orlando. Troopers say that the accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. one recent morning near the intersection of South Orange Blossom Trail and 39th Street. They report says that the victim was walking across South Orange Blossom Trail when she was struck for the first time but was not at an intersection or walking in a designated crosswalk at the time of the accident.
Haines City Girl Struck By Car While Walking to School Bus
Polk County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a pedestrian accident involving a seven-year-old girl who was struck by a car and injured recently while she walked to a school bus. According to deputies investigating the accident, the girl was walking across Johnson Avenue to the school bus when she was struck by a car driven by a 45-year-old man who was traveling eastbound. Deputies say that the man drove around the bus despite the fact that the stop sign arm was deployed and the lights on the bus were flashing. The collision caused the girl to fly seven feet into the air and land on the roadway. She was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando, where she is listed in stable condition with serious injuries. She is expected to recover from her injuries. The driver was arrested and is being held in the Polk County Jail. Deputies report that the man will face reckless driving and other charges in connection with the accident
State Sponsors Racecar to Raise Awareness About Pedestrian Safety
James O. Cunningham and other Orlando pedestrian accident lawyers applaud any efforts to make our area safer for pedestrians, including outside-the-box thinking like the state’s latest campaign. The Department of Transportation’s latest method may be unorthodox, but, as long as it works, that’s all that matters. The DoT recently sponsored a Toyota Camry racecar driven by Joe Nemechek, who drove 120 laps in a race at Daytona International Speedway with his number 87 car sporting the agency’s pedestrian-safety motto, "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow."
Orlando Police Crack Down on Drivers Who Fail to Yield to Pedestrians
Law enforcement officials in Central Florida are tired of our area’s reputation for pedestrian accidents. More than 8,000 people are injured in pedestrian accidents in our state every year, and regular readers of this blog know that the Orlando metropolitan area is among the most dangerous places for these accidents in the country. Last summer, this blog featured a post about a joint effort between Orlando Police and Orange County Sheriff’s Office called “Operation Best Foot Forward.” When the new program began last June, officers and sheriff’s deputies began handing out warnings to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians.
Florida Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident Kills Two Elderly Women
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers are asking for information in connection with a hit-and-run pedestrian accident in Orange County that killed two elderly women. Troopers are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has any information about it to contact them at 407-737-2213 as soon as possible. FHP spokesperson Sgt. Kim Montes says that the law enforcement community is looking for a white Honda with a spoiler on the back and halogen or blue-tinted headlights in connection with the accident.
Two Men Killed in Separate Florida Pedestrian Accidents on Thanksgiving
Two men were struck and killed in separate pedestrian accidents in Ocala on Thanksgiving Day. The first accident occurred at 1:15 a.m. that morning when a man trying to cross the intersection of South Pine Avenue and Southwest 10th Street was struck and killed in the crosswalk by a hit-and-run driver. One witness told Ocala police officers that she saw the victim running southbound on the crosswalk when he was struck by an eastbound driver who sped away from the scene. The victim was a 23-year-old Ocala college student who was home visiting family for the holiday.
Study Finds Drivers Less Likely to Stop at Orlando Crosswalks
While the Best Foot Forward campaign launched last summer has made some progress, a recent study conducted by MetroPlan Orlando indicates that much work remains in order to make Orlando roadways safer for pedestrians. Area law enforcement officials and pedestrian safety advocates launched the campaign in response to the Orlando metropolitan area’s reputation as being the most dangerous place in the country for pedestrians. High-profile signage and police stings at pedestrian crosswalks has had some impact on getting drivers to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks, especially at intersections where the speed limit is 35 mph or less.
Surgeon Speaks About Common Orlando Pedestrian Accident Injuries
A recent article published in the Orlando Sentinel shed some light on a distressingly common problem in Central Florida in general and Orlando in particular: the types of injuries that victims often suffer in pedestrian accidents. The writer interviewed Dr. John Promes, who is the medical director of the trauma unit at Orlando Health’s ORMC. Dr. Promes said that victims injured in Orlando pedestrian accidents "are one of our top three types of injuries that we see," along with people injured in auto accidents and slip and fall accidents.
Ten People Injured in Orlando Drag Racing Accident
Orlando police report that they have made an arrest in a recent drag racing incident that critically injured two people and sent eight other spectators to area hospitals. They say that the apprehension of one of the drivers, a 22-year-old Central Florida man, will lead to several charges including unlawful racing, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, reckless driving and others. Orlando auto accident attorney James O. Cunningham and his peers in the legal community find it sadly ironic that this crash happened shortly after Orlando city officials unanimously rejected a proposed plan to make area roadways safer by allowing drag racing on area racetracks.
Woman Killed in Orlando Pedestrian Accident
The Florida Highway Patrol reports that a 56-year-old Wilton Manors woman was recently struck and killed recently while trying to cross Orange Blossom Trail south of Orlando. Troopers say that the victim was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of Orange Blossom Trail near Whisper Lakes Boulevard about 9:45 p.m. when she walked into the path of a Nissan Xterra driven by an 18-year-old Orlando woman. Troopers say the driver of the Nissan had no time to avoid striking the pedestrian, and while their investigation is still ongoing, troopers report that they don’t expect to press charges against the driver. The victim was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she died from her injuries shortly after arrival.
