Florida Doesn’t Conduct Background Checks on Some Healthcare Professionals

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on April 23, 2011

A dentist has opened a new practice in Polk City despite his recent release after serving three years in a federal penitentiary for tax fraud. An investigation by Health News Florida found that the man has a valid Florida dental license after failing to pay more than two million dollars in tax fraud penalties. Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham warns Floridians that our state still does not provide adequate protection against unethical healthcare providers who move to Florida to continue practicing medicine. Even though the dentist in question was convicted for tax fraud, not dental malpractice, it is indicative of the lax background checks state agencies conduct before granting licenses.

Florida Woman Maimed in Vicious Pit Bull Attack

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on April 20, 2011

A Jacksonville woman attacked by her friend’s pit bull-Labrador mix now has permanent scars on her lower lip, and she is urging Florida lawmakers to toughen existing laws against dog attacks. The victim said she was lying on a bed in a friend’s home taking a nap when her friend’s dog attacked her, causing a tear in her lower lip that required 185 stitches and plastic surgery. She told reporters that she wants her friend’s dog to be euthanized so that it can’t harm anyone else. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham has supported stronger laws against dangerous dogs for years. While there has been some progress, much remains to be done to protect Floridians from pit bulls and other dangerous breeds.

Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Florida Down Since 2009

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on April 18, 2011

Florida’s streets and highways have been somewhat safer for motorcyclists over the last couple of years. Recent statistics indicate that for the first nine months of 2010, there were seven fewer motorcycle fatalities than the same time in 2009 and 80 fewer fatalities across the country during that time. Bikers say that part of the drop in fatal accidents is due to increased awareness of distracted drivers. Bikers say they see more drivers talking and texting on cell phones while behind the wheel these days, but they are getting better at giving them a wide berth. Orlando personal injury attorney James O. Cunningham is pleased to hear that motorcycle accident fatalities are down, but cautions that there is plenty of room for improvement in preventing motorcycle accidents and resulting injuries and deaths.

Orlando Planning Miles of Sidewalks to Prevent Pedestrian Accidents

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on April 16, 2011

Orlando officials are planning an additional 18 miles of sidewalks for city streets in an ambitious project scheduled to get underway this year. The additional miles of sidewalk are more than four times what they originally planned, and city officials are going to add even more miles of sidewalks after this part of the plan is complete. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham fully supports this and any other plans to reduce pedestrian accidents and make Orlando a safer place for people who walk, bike and jog on area roadways. He has been a strong advocate for making area streets and highways safer for everyone and supports any measure that prevents accidents.

A 45-year-old DeFuniak Springs man is facing careless driving charges after causing a Florida truck accident on U.S. Highway 90 recently. Florida Highway Patrol officers investigating the accident say that the driver was driving his tractor-trailer westbound on U.S. 90 when he rear-ended a Chevrolet Silverado around 12:38 p.m. The impact caused the semi to roll over and slide on its passenger side across the busy highway, completely blocking the eastbound lanes and partially blocking the westbound lanes.

Massive 1-4 Tour Bus Fire Attracts Gawkers, Creates Dangerous Situation

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on April 9, 2011

A spectacular tour bus fire on Interstate 4 recently snarled traffic for hours, and gawkers slowing down for a better view as well as those who stopped for a better look created a very dangerous situation. The tour bus was parked on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes when the fire began around noon on Sunday, April 18. Observers said that smoke from the fire could be seen for miles until firefighters arrived and extinguished the flames shortly thereafter. Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham cautions drivers that slowing down to get a better view of an accident scene is reckless and creates a potentially dangerous distracted driving situation.

Ford Motor Company expanded a recall involving their F-150 trucks recently, following recommendations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Ford’s F-150 pickup truck has been the best-selling vehicle in North America for the last 34 years, but recent airbag problems have prompted the automaker to expand the original recall. Initially, Ford recalled 144,000 F-150s, but the recall now affects more than 1.32 million trucks manufactured between 2004 and 2006 for problems involving accidental airbag deployment.

Lawmakers Push for Motorcoach Enhanced Safety Act

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on April 5, 2011

Several recent high-profile bus accidents, including one in New York in March that killed 15 people and injured 17 more, has prompted lawmakers from Ohio and Texas to press other members of Congress to pass the Motorcoach Enhanced Safety Act. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) spoke before fellow lawmakers recently and urged them to pass the Act, which would improve driver training and motorcoach safety. The Act was first proposed in 2007 after a bus accident in Atlanta that killed five members of the Bluffton University baseball team.
