Some Disney Amusement Parks to Open for 24 Hours for Promotion

Disney officials recently announced new attractions at their Magic Kingdom Fantasyland amusement park and plan to keep three of their parks open for 24 hours in May as part of their "Monstrous Summer" promotion. For 24 hours starting on May 24 at 6 a.m. and continuing until May 25 at 6 a.m., three of Disney’s parks will be open for guests to enjoy at least one of the new attractions and see sneak peeks of Pixar’s Monster’s University film scheduled for release this summer. The Fantasyland expansion has doubled the size of the park and will include the Princess Fairytale Hall, the Fantasy Forest and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster. Officials said that the expansion would allow guests to feel like they are a character in a Disney movie.

Organizers Expect 250,000 Visitors for This Year’s Bike Fest in Leesburg

Organizers of this year’s Bike Fest in Leesburg are expecting around 250,000 bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts at the yearly event, or around ten times the city’s population. The 17th annual Bike Fest is the single-largest event in Lake County each year and brings much-needed revenue to local merchants hit hard by the sluggish economy. Bike Fest is considered more family-friendly than Daytona Bike Week and other Florida motorcycle events are and offers live music, food, vendors and activities for kids. The event is scheduled for the weekend of April 26-28 and draws additional law enforcement personnel, as well as visitors. All of Leesburg’s police officers will be on duty for the event, and an additional 15 deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office will be on patrol for drunken drivers and riders and disorderly behavior.

Florida State Senator Strikes Two Deer While Texting and Driving

Sen. Nancy Detert, R-Venice, sponsor of SB 52, the Florida legislature’s latest attempt to ban sending and reading text messages while driving, decided to illustrate the dangers of texting while driving herself recently. She attempted to text while driving in the Capitol and struck two deer in the process. Working with the American Automotive Association, the Senator texted while she operated a driving simulator at the Capitol to show other lawmakers that it was time to take such legislation seriously.

Two Men Killed in Fiery Aviation Accident

Two men were killed recently when their helicopter crashed shortly after takeoff from Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport. According to their flight plan, the men were heading toward Orlando when their aircraft went down in an industrial park near the Everglades. The pilot had many years of experience flying helicopters and was the owner of a helicopter charter service based out of Kendall-Tamiami. No one on the ground was injured in the crash, but several nearby witnesses heard the accident and ran out with fire extinguishers to save the men.

Fatal Hit-and-Run Motorcycle Accident Closes I-4 for Several Hours

A fatal hit-and-run motorcycle accident that killed a Virginia man closed Interstate 4 for several hours recently as accident investigators reconstructed the accident and debris was cleared from the roadway. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers report that the victim was a 42-year-old man from Brightwood, Va., who may have participated in Bike Week festivities. The accident occurred around 1:15 a.m. on March 10 near Sanford, and law enforcement agencies are trying to contact the owner of a red 1998 Saturn that they believe was involved in the accident.

Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident Near Kissimmee

Kissimmee police accident investigators have revealed few details about a fatal motorcycle accident in Kissimmee but have said that their investigation is ongoing and charges are pending. Troopers report that the accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. on March 10 when a motorcyclist collided with a vehicle at the intersection of East Vine Street and Michigan Avenue. The victim was a 38-year-old Kissimmee man who was a member of the FLNY Ryderz motorcycle club. The accident closed the westbound lanes of Vine Street for several hours after the accident while investigators with the Traffic Homicide unit reconstructed the accident and debris was cleared from the scene.

Excessive Speed a Factor in Florida Auto Accident That Killed Three Men

Florida Highway Patrol troopers believe that excessive speed led to a horrific auto accident that killed three Illinois men. The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the evening of March 13 on Wekiva River Road near State Road 46 in Sorrento. The accident killed the 46-year-old driver and his 36-year-old and 28-year-old passengers, all from Illinois. Troopers closed Wekiva River Road for nearly six hours while they reconstructed the accident and cleared debris from the roadway. They believe that excessive speeds were a contributing factor in the grisly accident.

Multi-Vehicle Accident Involving School Bus Sends Two to Area Hospitals

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that a recent accident involving a school bus and three other vehicles sent two people to area hospitals. Troopers say that the accident occurred in Eustis around 6:50 a.m. when a man tried to pass the school bus in a no-passing zone. They say that the bus and a pickup truck were westbound on Thrill Hill Road near County Road 44-A when the 53-year-old driver of the truck attempted to pass the bus while it stopped to pick up students. As the 53-year-old DeLand man tried to pass the Lake County school bus, he swerved into oncoming traffic. Troopers say that he swerved right again to avoid colliding head-on with a van driven by a 58-year-old Eustis man and struck the bus. This collision caused the man to lose control of his pickup truck, and he struck the oncoming van. The van swerved in an attempt to avoid the pickup truck and struck another vehicle driven by a 58-year-old Apopka man.

Oviedo Woman Killed in Central Florida Bicycle Accident

A 77-year-old Oviedo woman was fatally injured recently in a bicycle accident near Winter Springs. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the woman was struck by a van while crossing Tuskawilla Road at Willa Springs Drive. Troopers report that the victim was struck around 11:30 a.m. and died from her injuries at the scene of the accident. The driver of the van and her three passengers were uninjured in the accident. Troopers have not yet determined whether or not they will press charges against the driver.

Victim’s Family Upset With Plea Deal in Fatal DUI Pedestrian Accident

Some family members of a man killed by a drunk driver in July 2011 are very unhappy with the conditions of a plea deal reached between the driver and the prosecutors in the case. The victim, who was a Special Olympics champion, was walking along Goldenrod Road at Daniel Webster Drive in Winter Park that day when he was struck and killed by a car driven by a woman who had a blood-alcohol concentration greater than twice the legal limit. Florida Highway Patrol troopers who investigated the accident reported that a passenger in the car was also inebriated at the time of the accident.
