Tampa Motorcyclist Fatally Injured in Tuesday Morning Accident
A motorcyclist was killed early Tuesday morning in an accident on Adamo Drive near U.S. 301 in Tampa, Florida. Authorities report that the motorcyclist and his passenger were traveling west on Adamo Drive when he lost control of the motorcycle due to slick road conditions and hit a median. A car subsequently hit the motorcycle, injuring the passenger and fatally injuring the driver. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Wet road conditions are dangerous at any time, though possible more so for motorcycles that for cars. Cars can hydroplane in as little as an inch of water, but a motorcycle can be affecting when there is only a thin sheen of water on the road. Because the vehicle is balanced on two wheels, instead of the stabilizing effect of four, small changes in road conditions can have a large impact on how it handles. This less stable center of gravity, coupled with the fact that a motorcyclist has not external protection from an impact with other cars, foreign objects or the pavement, make for a deadly combination in even accidents that occur at slow speeds.
In addition to road conditions, motorcyclists also have to stay acutely aware of other drivers on the road, who may not see them. Motorcycles are smaller and more nimble that your average car or SUV and many drivers are not looking or expecting to see a motorcyclist in front of them or in a side view mirror. Drivers who are not paying attention, possibly distracted by their cell phones, often pull in front of an oncoming motorcycle or change lanes with a motorcyclist beside them. Even though the driver is at fault for not yielding, the motorcyclist can wind up paying the physical price for someone else’s momentary lack of judgment. It is small comfort for victims and loved ones that the motorcyclist may have had the right of way.
