One Dead and Another Seriously Injured in Orlando Golf Cart Accident
A man from The Villages has died from injuries sustained when his golf cart crashed with a van on Tuesday, October 20th. It happened at the intersection of Odell Circle and Ambrosia Place in The Villages, just outside of Orlando. The Florida Highway Patrol said Donald T. Browne, 79, was driving his golf cart northbound on Odell Circle south of Ambrosia Place and turned into the path of a van driven by Merle L. Hoops of The Villages. The two vehicles collided and traveled several feet before coming to a complete stop. Browne and his passenger, 77-year-old Dorothy A. Browne, were both transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where Donald Browne died early Wednesday and Dorothy Browne is still in serious condition.
Golf carts are an extremely common sight in Florida, on and off the golf course. While spills on the golf course are often non-serious and play is shortly resumed, in several Florida communities where golf carts are the preferred (or required) mode of transportation, golf cart accidents can be quite serious, and in some devastating cases such as this, they can be fatal. It may surprise you to learn that according to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), around 15,000 people suffer injuries serious enough to warrant an emergency room visit in golf cart accidents each year in the U.S. Golf carts are not designed or engineered to handle turns well at any speed, nor do they have adequate safety features that protect passengers from danger when another vehicle is involved. As you might guess, the people most often ejected in golf cart accidents are retired people, but few people know that 40 percent of all accidents involving golf carts are children.
