70-Year-Old Injured in Central Florida Golf Cart Accident
A person driving a golf cart within the Central Florida town of The Villages was hospitalized after an accident in which they were involved towards the beginning of January. Reports from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicated that the driver of the golf cart was a 70-year-old individual who was using the golf cart along the road close to 8:30 on the morning of Tuesday, January 7th. It is not clear where the individual was headed, nor is it known where they were coming from. It does appear as though they were not golfing at the time.
The 70-year-old was traveling down the southern lanes of Sherwood Street when they neared the intersection of Sherwood and Winifred Way. At this time, an 81-year-old behind a Toyota RAV4 was also traveling towards the intersection of Sherwood and Winifred Way. It is not clear if the intersection features a four-way stop, but we do know that the 81-year-old behind the wheel of the RAV4 was traveling down Winifred Way. When they reached the intersection, they began to travel through, apparently believing the path to be clear.
At this time, the 70-year-old in the golf car also reached the intersection of Winifred and Sherwood Street. The reports make it clear that the driver of the golf cart did not stop at the stop sign and that they instead attempted to breeze through the intersection. The driver of the Toyota RAV4 was not able to stop their vehicle in time, and the golf cart subsequently collided forcefully with the side of the Toyota.
It is not known how fast either of the vehicles were traveling at the time of the crash, but it is clear that after the collision the golf cart overturned, spilling the 70-year-old driver across the asphalt.
When emergency medical teams reached the intersection, they rushed to the aid of the 70-year-old man. He was carefully picked up off of the ground and taken from the area to Ocala Regional Medical Center where doctors and nurses began to treat him for serious injuries. It is not currently clear if the individual was able to be treated and released or if they remain under the care of the medical facility.
