89-Year-Old Injured After Crashing Golf Cart into Sumter County Pole

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on May 4, 2020

Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol that emerged around an incident involving an 89-year-old Florida man, a golf cart, and a firmly planted pole began to emerge towards the end of April. According to these reports, it was on Monday, April 27th, that the almost 90-year-old individual decided to climb into his golf cart and take a drive. The reports did not indicate where the individual is believed to have been headed, and it is not clear if they were close to their residence or if they had traveled for some distance before the incident in question took place.

It was close to 10:00 the morning on Monday when the man in the golf cart was driving along a path specifically paved for golf carts that lies next to the El Camino Real. It is not clear if the man was alone in the cart or if there was perhaps a passenger with them. It is also not clear if there were many other carts traveling through the area and, if so, whether or not they were close to the 89-year-old.

The reports from the Florida Highway Patrol suggested that a large metal pole and a hefty concrete barrier lie close to the golf cart path in the area where the man was traveling. For reasons that are not entirely clear, it appears as though the 89-year-old did not see either the pole or the barrier. It is not known if this was because the driver was distracted, or if perhaps they momentarily lost control of the vehicle. Regardless of the circumstances, the golf cart struck both the pole and the barrier with considerable force.

Emergency response crews rushed to the area shortly after the call came in regarding the crash. When they reached the scene, they found the man inside of the cart had suffered from serious injuries due to the impact. The man was then taken via ambulance to a nearby hospital where he began to receive treatment for the injuries sustained in the crash.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing as the Florida Highway Patrol seeks to discover what caused the 89-year-old to fail to see the pole and whether or not any other contributing factors played a role in the incident.
