Florida Law Enforcement Urges Residents to be Safe This Holiday Weekend
With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, law enforcement in the Orlando area urge holiday revelers to use caution while celebrating, and to always buckle up when they get behind the wheel. The Eustis Police Department and several other municipalities will be participating in a Nationwide focus on seat belt and child safety restraint enforcement during the long weekend. Lake residents who are travelling on Florida roads should take heed – the base fine for not wearing a belt is $16. Fines for unrestrained children can be much higher.
In addition, the Sheriff’s Office will have extra officers out from its Marine Unit, checking on boaters and skiers through the weekend. Drinking and operating a boat or jet ski is viewed the same as drinking and driving under Florida law. Officials will be checking to make sure all boat operators are safe to drive and working to keep people safe, both on and off the beach.
While some may find the stepped up presence of law enforcement to present a damper to their otherwise good time, the statistics show that the Memorial Day holiday is one of the deadliest, not only in Florida but Nationwide. The National Highway Safety and Transportation Administration estimates that approximately 400 people will lose their lives over Memorial Day weekend and that the rate of boating accidents will be triple that of a normal weekend. Sadly, those that are injured or killed in these accidents are not always the ones at fault.
It only takes a split second for some else’s poor judgment to affect your life forever. A decision to have a few beers and get behind the wheel or to go speeding through shallow water where kids are playing nearby can have disastrous consequences. The victims of such horrific accidents are often merely at the wrong place at the wrong time. For these victims, sometimes justice is neither swift nor fair.
