Jet Ski Crash on Indian River Kills 12-Year-Old Passenger in Brevard County
According to preliminary incident reports from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) operating within Brevard County, a 12-year-old boy suffered fatal injuries this past Friday morning after he was ejected from a jet ski during a collision with another vessel along the Indian River near Rockledge.
Early details from Brevard County investigators as well as members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission state that it was approximately 10:30 a.m. on August 20, 2021, when the FWC was first notified of an accident involving a boat and jet ski rental on the Indian River adjacent to the affluent South Indian River Isles neighborhood. Family members who witnessed the horrific crash told officials that the 12-year-old male juvenile and the adult driver of the jet ski were both thrown from the personal watercraft into the Indian River when the collision occurred.
Residents of the South Indian River Isles community who had started to gather at the scene recalled that the occupants of the boat quickly sped off to the nearest dock to find help for their injured relatives. Finally, after successfully tracking down a paint delivery man at a nearby construction site and borrowing his cell phone, a family member was able to call the local authorities for emergency assistance.
Shortly after the initial 9-1-1 call, Brevard County emergency response teams arrived at the accident site and quickly transported the 12-year-old boy to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, however, due to the incredibly severe nature of his injuries, he was unable to survive and sadly passed away. The other adult occupant of the jet ski was unharmed in the collision and no other injuries have been reported by anyone else involved in the deadly accident.
Although the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has opened an investigation into this fatal boat crash, they have yet to determine the exact cause behind the collision.
