Suspect in Orlando Hit-and-Run Accident Found
The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says it has located a suspect relating to a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened in Orange County last Friday. According to the police report, the accident happened at around 5:30 am when the suspect’s 2007 Honda CRV struck a bicyclist near Orlando’s Colonial Drive and Berekely Street.
The crash left the bicyclist dead and the suspect fled the scene. His car was found Monday in Brevard County, Florida, and police say that the damage to the front of the vehicle is consistent with striking a bicyclist. Evidence is currently at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement lab for further testing and confirmation.
As is made clear in the case at hand, the majority of car versus cyclist accidents result in the biker suffering from serious injuries or death. In fact, some statistics say that 90% of all car versus bike accidents result in serious injuries, and more than 2% in death. This is primarily because a cyclist has very little to protect themselves against a speeding, distracted, intoxicated or careless driver.
Through no fault of their own, the cyclist is the one who bears the brunt of an accident. For example, common injuries in a bike versus car accident include:
- Broken bones
- Facial injuries
- Dental injuries
- Sprains and strains
- Cuts and bruises
- Road rash
- Spinal cord injuries
Luckily, an injured cyclist does have the legal right to seek monetary compensation for their injuries. To do this, they must file a Florida personal injury lawsuit (in the case of a death, the deceased’s surviving family members may seek compensation via the Florida wrongful death statute). If successful, the injured cyclist can receive compensation for past and future medical expenses, past and future loss of wages and pain and suffering – among other damages.
