Seminole County Cyclist Killed while Crossing Road

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on September 25, 2017

In Seminole County this past Friday night, an unidentified woman was riding her bicycle eastbound on Lake Drive close to where it intersects with Huntridge Way. According to the report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the woman, believed to be around 49-years-old, was on her bike around 11:15 when she decided to try and cross the road. It is not clear whether or not she was in a lane at the time that she decided to cross or if she suddenly pulled out from the shoulder. What is known is that at the time when she chose to cross the road a Honda, being driven by a teenage boy who has also not been named, was right behind her.

As she tried to make the turn, the woman pulled directly in front of the Honda. It is not known whether or not the teenager behind the wheel was aware of the cyclist before the crash took place or if her appearance was an unexpected surprise. What is clear is that the teenager failed to stop the car in time to avoid the woman on the bicycle.

Because the incident is not being treated as a hit-and-run, it seems apparent that the teenager stayed at the scene of the crash after it occurred. Someone, perhaps the teenager, called 9-1-1 and emergency response teams from various Seminole County towns arrived shortly thereafter. The woman on the bicycle was lifted into a waiting ambulance and rushed to an Oviedo hospital. Unfortunately, the extent of her injuries made it so that the medical personnel at the hospital were not able to help her in any way. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The teenager driving the Honda was reportedly not injured in the incident and it is not believed that there was anyone else in the car with the teenager at the time of the crash. Florida Highway Patrol detectives are still investigating the accident to see if they cannot uncover any additional information as to what may have caused this deadly encounter to begin with.
