Orlando Man Struck and Killed in Bicycle Accident
Police report that a 20-year-old Orlando man died recently from injuries he suffered after being struck by two vehicles. Investigating officers say that the man was riding his bike in the eastbound lanes of State Road 50 near South Tanner Road in east Orange County around 2:30 in the morning when he was struck by a Toyota Tacoma pickup driven by a 23-year-old Titusville man. Officers say that the impact launched the victim into the outside lane of S.R. 50 and into the path of a Honda Civic driven by a 31-year-old Orlando man.
The driver of the Honda stayed at the accident scene and waited for emergency responders to arrive. The driver of the Tacoma reportedly left the accident scene shortly after the accident occurred but later spoke with Florida Highway Patrol troopers at their Titusville office. The victim was rushed to Florida Hospital East, where he was pronounced dead of his injuries shortly after arrival. Police say their investigation is ongoing and that charges are pending against the driver of the Tacoma.
At least 116 Floridians were killed in bicycle accidents in 2012 and thousands more were injured. Despite advances in helmet design and other safety equipment for riders, a bicyclist has little protection when he or she is struck by a motorized vehicle weighing several thousand pounds. As a result, many survivors of Florida bicycle accidents face a long and expensive road to recovery, with medical bills quickly climbing into the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. The financial hardship that accident victims and their families must contend with in the weeks and months following an accident make this difficult time even more stressful and confusing, especially when negligence is a contributing factor in the accident. This is one of the many reasons why injured riders need an experienced Orlando bicycle accident attorney to counsel them and help them receive the fair and just compensation they need and deserve.
