Broward County Hit-and-Run Accident Severely Injures Lifelong Bicyclist
While authorities with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office continue their investigation into a severe hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a 67-year-old bicyclist on West Commercial Boulevard in Tamarac last Friday, two sisters are asking for the public’s assistance with the identification of the driver who crashed into their father then left him for dead.
According to collision reports from deputies with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, it was during the early morning hours of August 6, 2021, when Winston Copeland, a 67-year-old avid bicyclist, set out on his usual trek along the eastbound bike lane of West Commercial Boulevard to the nearby McDonalds where he worked. As he approached the 5700 block of the street on his bicycle, he was struck head-on by a silver Nissan Pathfinder SUV which sped away immediately after the collision.
Local officers and emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene of the bicycle accident where it was quickly determined that the injured bicyclist was the victim of a hit-and-run due to the nature of his injuries and the type of debris left behind by the offending vehicle. The 67-year-old man was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he is currently fighting for his life. In addition to multiple broken bones and a punctured lung, the damage to Mr. Copeland’s right arm was so severe that it required an amputation by hospital surgeons.
Detectives with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office believe they are looking for a 2013-2019 silver Nissan Pathfinder with front-end damage to the passenger’s side headlight, fog light, and the supportive black brace that keeps it in place.
“You need to right your wrong by coming forward. He’s a human being,” said one of the victim’s daughters in a press release to the public on Friday.
