Leesburg Woman Struck, Killed by Delivery Truck
A collision between a delivery truck and an elderly Leesburg woman resulted in the death of the woman a week ago on Thursday. According to the official report filed by the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place just before 9:00 in the morning near to the Lake County intersection of Crooked Oaks Lane and Timber Crest Drive.
The 27-year-old driver of the delivery truck, a Kissimmee resident, had stopped either in the driveway of the 86-year-old woman’s home or on the street outside of her home. The man exited the truck and delivered a package to the woman. The report did not specify whether or not the woman received the package herself or if the man simply dropped the delivery off at her door. Either way, the man then climbed back inside of the vehicle.
At this point, the driver of the delivery truck (the report did not name which delivery service the man worked for) began to reverse in order to exit the driveway or to maneuver away from the curb and back into the street. For reasons that are not clear, the woman was behind his truck at this point in time. The driver either failed to see her or believed that there was enough space between the vehicle and the woman. Regardless, it was while he was reversing the truck that he struck the woman.
Either the driver of the delivery truck or a witness to the morning accident called 9-1-1. Officers with the Florida Highway Patrol joined paramedics and other first responders as they rushed to the scene of the accident at Crooked Oaks Lane and Timber Crest Drive. When they arrived, they found the woman in critical condition, but still alive. She was taken by ambulance to the nearby Leesburg Regional Medical Center where she immediately began to receive treatment.
The doctors and nurses did everything they could for the woman, but the damages to her body after the collision with the large truck were too much to overcome, and she was declared dead shortly after arriving at the medical center.
It is believed that charges are currently being filed against the driver of the delivery truck.
