Lake County Couple Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident
Late Wednesday evening in Sorrento, Florida, a young couple was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident involving two separate vehicles.
Twenty-six year-old James Burns and his passenger, eighteen year-old Alexandria Swisher were travelling by moped southbound on County Road 437 near Central Avenue, when they were struck by a Kia Sol that was navigating a turn and ran a stop sign. The impact of the accident sent the moped and its riders into oncoming northbound traffic, where they were again hit, this time by a Toyota Prius that was unable to prevent the collision. The driver of the Kia, who authorities believe to be a female, immediately fled the scene after the accident.
Emergency response teams were dispatched to the intersection where, despite their best efforts, they were unable to revive James Burns, and he died at the scene. Alexandria Swisher was transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital, and is listed in serious condition according to hospital personnel. Neither rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The couple driving the Prius, Peter and Alicia Burnell, were uninjured.
Video surveillance of this incident was recorded by JR’s Automotive Service, a business in close proximity to the accident. Employee Richard Jimenez provided the Florida Highway Patrol with the footage. “The video was a little nerve racking. It’s pretty bad. I mean, he hit him and you could tell you hit something and just slammed on the gas and took off, and you can see the car go out. You can see it in the video. You will then understand it was horrible to me, it was,” he told authorities.
This case is currently under investigation, and the Florida Highway Patrol is actively searching for a 2012 or 2013 grey Kia Sol. If you have any information regarding this fatal hit-and-run accident, please contact the FHP at 407-737-2213.
