Toyota Orders Worldwide Prius Recall
This article describes the Toyota Motor Corporation’s increasing recall problems in the United States and other markets around the world with the company’s recent announcement of recalls of many of the company’s hybrid models. The Toyota Prius is the largest target of the recall, but the recall also affects other hybrid models. The recall includes 437,000 total vehicles for brake problems that owners have been reporting since the 2010 Prius models went on sale in May 2009.
In addition to the recall, the world’ largest automaker has also suspended sales and manufacturing of many of its most popular models until the problems can be found and fixed. The models included in the recall are:
- 133,000 Prius models
- 14,500 Lexus models
- 7,300 Camry models
- And some other Toyota models
The company’s problems concern brakes on some hybrid models that malfunction when traveling over slick surfaces. Toyota hybrid owners report that when they are traveling over slippery road, or just after they have traveled over uneven road surfaces or potholes, the brakes on their vehicles are temporarily unresponsive. This defect in the braking system has some Toyota owners understandably concerned about the safety of driving these vehicles.
The recall on Toyota hybrid automobiles comes on the heels of the biggest recall in company history for sticking accelerators in many Toyota models, tarnishing the brand’s reputation for safety and reliability. Toyota has announced that hybrid owners in the United States will begin receiving recall notices in the coming weeks. Toyota sold more than 1.6 million Prius models since the brand launched ten years ago and critics have said that the company has reacted too slowly to customers’ complaints about the braking problem.
