Toxic Chemicals in AFFFs Allegedly Linked to Nearly 1000 Cancer Cases in Firefighters

AFFF Foam Lawsuits

As of January 19th, 2021, more than 950 product liability injury claims have been filed by current and former firefighters throughout the state of South Carolina against manufacturing giants 3M, Dupont, and Chemours, alleging that these particular companies were aware that their aqueous film-forming foams – a fire suppression system commonly used by firefighters and the United States military – contained extremely toxic, cancer-causing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, but still chose to produce the foams and continued to do so for decades.

According to recently filed legal documents within multiple districts of the South Carolina federal court system, an alarming amount of firefighters have been diagnosed with a wide range of severe & devastating life-threatening illnesses and cancers due to their daily, prolonged contact, exposure, and interactions with aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) and subsequently the perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) used to create them, including:

  • bladder cancer
  • breast cancer
  • kidney cysts & cancer
  • liver cancer
  • pancreatic cancer
  • prostate cancer
  • testicular cancer
  • tumors
  • ulcerative colitis

The plaintiffs in this case go on to state that the defendants, 3M, Dupont, and Chemours, knew that the PFAS could build-up in the body over time and therefore had the serious potential to cause hazardous health issues and irreversible damage to anyone who came in contact with the AFFFs, yet decided not disclose this vital information to the government or public for undetermined reasons.

If you have been diagnosed with cancer after being exposed to aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) or perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFAS), you may be entitled to compensation.
