Second Death Confirmed in Florida Vaping Incident
The vaping craze that swept the nation over the past few years has become a noticeable public health disaster, with numerous incidents of severe injury and death occurring due to the products. In Florida, a second death due to health complications from vaping was reported as having taken place this December.
Reports from the Florida Department of Health on this death come shortly after a very recent study from this department which raised the number of people suffering from vaping related illnesses from 99 to 103. While most of the details relating to the December death remain distant from the public sphere, we do know that the first vaping death in Florida happened in September.
While these two incidents are the first reported cases of vaping deaths, the family of a third individual, a 28-year-old Orange County resident, is claiming that this person died as a result of vaping. According to the family, numerous government agencies are involved in examining the 28-year-old’s death. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as well as the Food and Drug Administration both contacted the family as first steps into an investigation into the individual’s death. According to the family, the 28-year-old was using vaping cartridges manufactured by the Vuse company and the government agencies collected the used cartridges in order to examine them.
Reports from the medical examiner’s office indicated that employees at the hospital where the 28-year-old died strongly believed that vaping led to the fatality. This belief persists even as the toxicology tests performed on the young man returned with negative results.
The death of the 28-year-old, the individual in September, and the individual earlier in December are part of a national wave of illnesses and fatalities occurring as a result of vaping. According to the Center for Disease Control, there have been 47 deaths across 25 states linked to vaping. Another report, this time from the Federal Drug Administration, stated that it now possesses 1,100 differed samples which will aid in its ongoing investigation into deaths and illnesses that occur as a result of people using vape pens and other related products.
At this point in time, it is not clear what will happen as a result of all this information, but it is clear that many, many people and grieving families are searching for answers and justice.
