Recall on Hyundai Elantra to Affect Over 150,000 Vehicles
A recall on the 2011-2012 Hyundai Elantra is expected to affect over 150,000 vehicles in 2016, according to early reports. The recall involves a possible malfunction in the electronic stability control system. A malfunction could potential cause the engine to lose power and the steering to pull to one side of the vehicle. Owners who have experienced the malfunction have compared it to suddenly getting a flat tire or driving on ice.
Any sudden change in the handling of or the direction of travel of the vehicle increases the risk of an accident, which prompted the issuance of the recall. Hyundai says that it will begin notifying Elantra owners by mail February 19th, or owners may contact the auto manufacturer directly prior to the notification.
This recall is just the latest in a string of recalls involving auto manufacturers’ faulty equipment. In the news most recently, airbags manufactured by Takata for use in Honda’s and Nissan’s were found to have small pieces of plastic that could potentially turn into shrapnel when the airbag was triggered. Also, faulty ignition switches in GM’s vehicles which have caused vehicles to unexpectedly shut off or disable safety features. Toyota also experienced recalls in the last few years related to unexpected engine acceleration while drivers were maintaining otherwise steady speeds.
As consumers, Americans should be able to feel confident that when purchasing an automobile that the manufacturer has taken the time and effort to examine vehicle performance, especially safety performance, and to make sure that all systems are performing properly. However, sometimes it seems that many companies are more interested in putting a product out into the market quickly, and only test the safety aspects after accidents have already occurred. The results of these actions can by horrifying for victims and their loved ones.
