Malfunctioning Motor Scooter Behind Death of Individual in St. Petersburg

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on July 20, 2019

It appears that a malfunction within a motor scooter’s braking system caused the death of a single person in a city close to Tampa on the night of Saturday, July 13th. Reports from the St. Petersburg Police Department indicated that the incident took place sometime around 10:00 at night, and that only the single vehicle was involved.

The driver of the moped, a 31-year-old individual who was named following the initial reports, was on a Chongqing Astronautic Bashan motor scooter as he headed down 58th Street North. It is not known where the individual was coming from or where they were going, but it appears as though they were alone on the bike. It also appears as though they were not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. The reports from the St. Petersburg Police Department went further and stated that the 31-year-old is believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the accident, although it was not immediately clear if this impairment played any role in the malfunction within the vehicle itself.

It was while the 31-year-old was traveling along an area of 58th Street just south of the intersection between this road and 29th Avenue North that something happened within the vehicle to cause the brakes to lock. The St. Petersburg Police Department reports did not indicate just why it was believed that the brakes had locked, although it is possible that there were witnesses to the scene who were able to provide pieces of information that led police towards this conclusion.

After the brakes on the motor scooter locked, the bike skidded across the roadway, ultimately making heavy contact with the curb located along 58th Street North’s eastern side. As a result of this crash, the driver of the scooter was thrown off of the vehicle and onto the ground. It is believed that the force of the impact caused the majority of the damages suffered by the scooter’s rider.

When paramedics and EMTs arrived at the scene, the 31-year-old was still alive, but in critical condition. They were then taken from the scene of the accident and rushed to St. Petersburg General Hospital. Sometime after being admitted to the hospital they were pronounced dead. It is believed that the incident remains under investigation.
