Ceiling Collapses in Daytona Beach Apartment
Lisa Parker, a Daytona Beach resident, received a massively unpleasant shock when she came home from her work on Tuesday evening. Upon opening her door, instead of finding her home quiet and waiting, she saw that the entire ceiling had collapsed in her home, covering everything with drywall and dust.
The apartment complex, located on Wild Olive Avenue, is a mostly peaceful one, and, when asked, some of the residents living above the apartment in question said that they did hear a tremendously loud crash around 4:30 in the afternoon, before the woman living in the apartment arrived home.
According to Parker, the first thing that came to mind when she opened her door and saw the carnage is that she must have done something wrong. Her second thought was to locate her 8-month old cat, which she suspects was sleeping around the time that the ceiling unexpectedly collapsed.
The Daytona Beach Firefighters were called in to help Parker search for her beloved pet. They used an infrared device to search through the debris, but were ultimately unable to locate the missing animal.
Regarding the ceiling, Parker reports that she did notice that there was a large crack running along it. However, she says that she never thought it was large enough to be such a prevalent problem or that she needed to take extra precautions to protect herself and her belongings. Like many people who live in apartments, Parker is not the owner of her unit. The owners, who have yet to be named, have issued a statement to Florida’s News 6 that the conditions that led to the ceiling collapse are under investigation and that they are using their insurance company as much as possible to help Parker. Furthermore, the landlords have said that they want to go through the entire building to ensure that all the other units are safe.
Although no person was injured as a result of this event, it is clear that a circumstance such as this is a horribly traumatic and unsettling experience for all those involved. Add to this the potential loss of a pet and the incident becomes even more catastrophic.
