Two Injured in DeLand Firework Accident
The DeLand Fire Department was called to a private residence in the City of DeLand during the afternoon of Wednesday, July 15th, in response to reports of an accident involving two men and fireworks. The reports we have at the time of this writing come from tweets posted on Twitter by the DeLand Fire Department as well as reports from News 6 who sent reporters to the scene after the incident was first called in to emergency response teams.
The events leading up to the incident remain under investigation, but we know that two unnamed individuals were enjoying the afternoon together when they decided to include fireworks in their recreation. It is true that the conditions throughout the state due to the out of control pandemic have resulted in many people feeling heightened levels of stress, and the lack of many of the amenities with which people used to distract and entertain themselves has led people to try and find fun in other, sometimes more dangerous ways.
Such are the circumstances into which the two individuals involved in the July 15th incident entered, fireworks in hand.
What exactly took place on the day in question remains either the subject of an investigation or simply not reported in the initial statements made about the incident. We do know that the two people, neither of whom were named or identified in any way, were somewhere along South Adelle Avenue the day drew close to 2:00 in the afternoon. When the fireworks were introduced into the day, it is not clear if the two understood the dangerous nature of the devices or how to properly use them. During their engagement with the explosives, it appears as though one or both of the people failed to release the items from their hands quickly enough after lighting the fuse. The following blast caused both individuals to suffer serious injuries.
One of the two was airlifted from the scene and flown to Halifax Health Medical Center in the City of Daytona Beach. The second person was taken via ambulance to a hospital located close to the area where the accident took place. We know that the second person was treated for both eye and hand injuries, while the injuries affecting the first person were not included in the initial reports.
Both people are currently in stable condition.
