Parasailing Accidents and Florida Personal Injury Law
Florida has some of the best parasailing in the world. Gorgeous beaches and fantastic weather mean parasail companies can take visitors and locals out for parasailing trips year-round. Parasailing is a beautiful way to take in Florida’s one-of-a-kind waters, but it’s not without risks. Accident rates are high for parasailing. There have been more than 1,200 in Florida over the past 30 years, yet there were no official regulations for tour operators promoting the sport until late last year.
As of October 14th, revised maritime safety laws include the parasailing business. Under Florida Statute 327, all parasailing operators are required to follow new safety standards. The statute requires operators to document weather conditions before commencing a trip; limits the time and location where parasailing tours can be held; requires operators to bring observers on parasailing trips to monitor conditions; mandates liability insurance; and requires operators to obtain a license from the U.S. Coast Guard.
While overall parasailing is a fun and safe activity, there have been some horrific accidents in recent years. In a high-profile case in 2014, two teens suffered serious injuries that will affect them for life, and received a sizeable settlement.
