Orange County Construction Worker Struck by Car

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on May 29, 2018

Early on the morning of Friday, May 25th, a 42-year-old construction worker at work on a routine project along State Road 417 in Orange County was badly injured after he was struck by a car passing through the construction zone. According to initial reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place at some point in the early morning rush hour, while many people were traveling along the roads on their way to work.

The construction worker was well inside of the construction zone before the collision took place. At the time, he was walking throughout the area, collecting the bright orange construction cones that had been placed around the construction site.

Into the scene drove a 28-year-old individual. This person was inside of their car, traveling down one of the leftmost lanes of southbound 417. According to the official reports, as this person neared the construction zone they also approached a line of stopped or dramatically slower traffic. Instead of following the rest of the traffic flow, the 28-year-old simply swerved into the right lane. It is not clear if they were unaware of the slower traffic until they almost collided with the rear of a car (thus rendering the swerve into the right lane an evasive maneuver), but, regardless of the reasons, it was as they changed from the left to the right lane that they clipped the construction worker.

The force of the collision was enough to send the worker sailing over a guardrail and then down an embankment on the other side of the metal barrier. By the time they reached the conclusion of their fall, they were badly injured and in need of medical attention. A witness to the crash called 9-1-1, and police and paramedics were on the scene shortly afterwards. The construction worker was then taken from the crash site to Orlando Regional Medical Center where they are currently being treated for their injuries.

The driver of the car involved remained at the scene of the crash throughout the entire preliminary investigation. At the time of this writing, it is believed that they received a ticket for failing to remain in the proper lane. It is not clear if any additional charges are pending.
