Motorcyclist Dies in Tampa Crash

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on March 9, 2019

On the morning of Wednesday, March 6th, a biker was killed in a Tampa motorcycle accident that happened along Channelside Drive after they were violently thrown from their vehicle. According to reports from the Tampa Police Department, the motorcyclist, a 23-year-old, was aboard their motorcycle at around 9:15 in the morning when they neared the intersection of Channelside Drive and South Florida Avenue within the city of Tampa.

The Tampa Police Department stated that the motorcyclist was, at the time of the accident, traveling in the leftmost lane of eastbound Channelside Drive. When it reaches the intersection, this lane becomes a turn-only lane, meaning that the motorcyclist was obligated to use the lane for turning off of Channelside and onto S Florida Avenue. For reasons that are not clear, it seems that when the motorcyclist reached the intersection, they continued to travel straight on Channelside Drive.

Although illegal, this would not have been a problem had it not been for another car that was also traveling down Channelside Drive at this time. This car was traveling down the lane beside the lane with the motorcycle, and it is a fact that this lane is also available for this wishing to turn left. As this driver reached the intersection, they began to initiate their left turn. Because the motorcyclist was not turning, this meant that the car turned directly into the path of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was unable to change their course or respond to the incursion of the car in time and instead struck the left side of the car.

As a result of the crash, the motorcyclist was thrown from their car and onto the ground. They sustained severe injuries in this crash, and despite the work of the EMTs and paramedics who rushed to respond to the incident there was nothing that could be done. They were declared dead as a result of the crash.

The investigation into the incident so far has revealed that the motorcyclist was likely traveling at an unsafe rate of speed in the moments before the collision. Nothing else has yet been revealed and no charges have been filed.
