Memorial Day Weekend Head-On Crash Kills Two Motorcyclists in Marion County
As the motorcycle enthusiasts, riders, and revelers hit the local Florida roads to head home from the Rolling Thunder patriotic bike rally held this Memorial Day weekend in Merritt Island, authorities in neighboring Marion County are continuing their investigation into a deadly head-on collision which claimed the lives of two motorcyclists this past Thursday along State Road 200.
According to accident reports from the responding officers with the Florida Highway Patrol working within Marion County, it was shortly after 9 p.m. on May 27th, 2021, when a 56-year-old man from Hernando was driving a pickup truck at a high rate of speed down S.R. 200 near SW 147th Lane. As he approached a slower vehicle within his lane, the driver proceeded to maneuver his pickup truck into the opposite direction of traffic in order to pass the upcoming motorist. This hasty and drastic decision put the pickup truck right in the path of a 38-year-old male motorcyclist and his 31-year-old female passenger – a couple from Weirsdale. Unable to react in enough time to avoid the collision, the motorcycle was struck head-on by the pickup truck.
Local law enforcement along with Marion County emergency medical teams arrived at the scene of the fatal accident to discover that both occupants of the motorcycle were not able to survive the severe nature of their injuries and they had died almost immediately after impact. The 56-year-old pickup truck driver was transported to the Ocala Regional Medical Center where he received treatment for minor non-life-threatening injuries.
It is unclear at this time if the 56-year-old Hernando man will face any legal charges or consequences stemming from his involvement in the head-on collision and subsequent deaths of the two motorcyclists from Weirsdale. The Florida Highway Patrol will notify the public regarding any further developments in the case.
