Interstate 75 Crash Kills One, Injures Two Others
In an unfortunate accident on the afternoon of Thursday, February 18th, 2016, a young motorcyclist was killed in a crash on I-75. The incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. in Hillsborough County.
The victim of the crash, 22-year-old Jowel Jacob Figuero was headed north on the interstate in the center lane when a 2003 Volkswagen Passat merged in front of him. The Passat, driven by 28-year-old Nenad Spanovic of Tampa, FL, did not clear the front end of Figuero’s motorcycle, and the front wheel of the bike hit the back of the car. As a result, Figuero was thrown from the motorcycle, causing severe injuries. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital to be treated, but was later pronounced dead.
Spanovic’s Passat had also been carrying a passenger at the time of the crash: 28-year-old Edita Memic. Both suffered minor injuries, but it is not apparent whether or not they required any hospital care.
An investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol is still pending, and charges have not yet been brought. It is also unclear whether Spanovic bears all of the fault for the accident, or whether Figuero had helped to create a dangerous situation. So far, no additional information has been released regarding whether authorities suspect the involvement of factors like texting or drug/alcohol use.
