Dunedin Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash
A 56-year-old man from Dunedin was killed after he was thrown from his motorcycle after colliding with a truck that crossed into his oncoming path on U.S. Highway 19 in Clearwater, Florida.
The crash happened on the evening of November 8th, when Walter Hertrich, 70, of Palm Harbor, turned his F150 truck off of southbound US-19 onto Congress Avenue in Clearwater. Lawrence J. Silva and his passenger Laurel J. Silva, 59 were riding on a Kawasaki motorcycle in the northbound lane and were unable to avoid crashing into Hertrich’s truck. Lawrence was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and suffered fatal injuries at the scene. Laurel was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she is listed in critical condition. Hertrich suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mease Countryside for treatment.
Even when wearing a helmet or other protective gear, motorcyclists are often no match to a collision with another vehicle or the road. Tragically, in the event that motorcycle passengers does not wear a helmet, lasting head/brain injuries and death are extremely likely in an accident. After being thrown from their vehicle, motorcycle accident victims often spend weeks or even months in a coma before awakening to learn the challenges their life holds ahead.
