Daytona Beach Man and Mother Killed in Easter Weekend Motorcycle Accident
In what should have been a weekend of family Easter celebrations, quickly took a turn for the worse after a fatal motorcycle accident tragically claimed the lives of both a Volusia County man & his mother this past Saturday afternoon, according to initial reports from the Florida Highway Patrol.
At approximately 4:15 p.m., Mark Buffington, 30, who resided in Daytona Beach, and his mom/passenger Heidi Buffington, 53, a Palm Bay native, were travelling together southbound down Babcock Street on their 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle when Roger Colvard, 72, also from Palm Bay, was driving his 2007 Chevy pickup truck and began to maneuver a left turn at the intersection of Babcock Street & Burgandy Road.
It was at this time that the pickup truck caused a T-bone accident with the motorcycle, crashing into the bike’s right-hand side. The impact from the collision was so forceful that it ejected both the driver and the passenger from the motorcycle onto the roadway.
Brevard County emergency response teams arrived within minutes of the crash, and began to administer medical treatment to the two accident victims. Unfortunately, due to the severity of her injuries, Heidi Buffington was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son, Mark Buffington was stable enough at the time to be transported to Health First Palm Bay Hospital, but ultimately passed away a short time later.
It is unknown if alcohol played a factor in this collision, and charges are pending against the uninjured driver of the pickup truck, FHP Lt. Kim Montes stated in a press release on Sunday.
Warmer weather means more motorcycles on the road, and since this is just the beginning of Spring, you can be sure to see additional traffic along Florida’s city streets and highways. Motorists and bikers alike are encouraged to keep an extra eye out for each other in order to reduce the number of accidents for the upcoming biking season.
