58-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed During Crash Near DeLand
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol operating in Volusia County are currently investigating a fatal motorcycle accident that claimed the life of a 58-year-old man earlier this afternoon along International Speedway Boulevard outside DeLand.
Preliminary incident reports from the Florida Highway Patrol state that it was 12:14 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, when a 58-year-old man from Daytona Beach was driving a 2003 Honda motorcycle in the westbound direction of International Speedway Boulevard. As the biker approached Old Daytona Road, a 79-year-old man from DeLand driving a 2023 Mercedes-Benz suddenly pulled out from Old Daytona Road into the direct path of the motorcycle. Neither man was able to avoid a collision and the motorcyclist crashed into the driver’s side of the Mercedes.
Within a few minutes of the collision, multiple Volusia County EMTs and officials with the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the site of the two-vehicle accident. Despite their best life-saving efforts, the 58-year-old motorcyclist passed away at the scene from his severe injuries.
The 79-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz was uninjured and remained at the crash site after the collision occurred.
Traffic homicide investigators worked the accident scene for several hours to gather evidence, temporarily closing the westbound lanes of International Speedway Boulevard.
No further information is known at this time. Updates are expected to be given at the conclusion of the case.
Home to two of the largest motorcycle rallies in the United States, Florida has long been a mecca for motorcyclists, with some spending countless hours riding across the country just to reach Daytona Beach. And while this is excellent for local tourism and the biker community itself, the increased number of motorcycles on our highways & byways also raises the chances of being involved in an accident.
