Several Children and Adults Struck by Car While Waiting at Tampa Bus Stop
A terrible and terrifying crash happened inside the Hillsborough County city of Tampa on Thursday, November 1st, at a bus stop used by children waiting to go to school. According to the reports from the police with the Tampa Police Department, the bus accident happened shortly after 8:00 in the morning, when school busses were traveling throughout the city to pick up children and bring them to their schools.
The bus stop where the collision took place is located at the intersection of East Bougainvillea and Marvy Avenue, and shortly before the crash itself a group of people was standing along the southern side of Bougainvillea waiting for the school bus. In this group were children as well as adults, and it is believed that the adults in this situation were the parents or legal guardians of at least several of the children standing beside the road.
Before the bus arrived to take the children, a car traveling down the eastern lane of Bougainvillea reached the area. The report from the police suggests that the driver of this car was speeding at the time, but it is not believed that they were under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. For reasons that are not entirely clear, the driver lost control of their vehicle at the exact intersection with the bus stop. As the driver was unable to regain control of the car, it shot off of the roadway and into the small group of people waiting for the bus. Ultimately, three children from between the ages of 6 and 12 were struck by the car. Two adults were also impacted by the vehicle, although their ages were not given in the initial report.
Emergency response crews were called in to the scene and rushed to the area to attend to the injured individuals. While it is not believed that anyone was killed in the incident, at least one of the children was transported to the hospital in what was described as “critical condition.” It is believed that everyone involved is currently recovering from the crash, and charges are pending against the driver of the car.
