School Bus Struck by Pickup Truck in Orange County

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on August 20, 2019

Members of the Florida Highway Patrol were on hand to respond to reports of an accident that took place in Orange County between a school bus and a pickup truck. According to troopers and news agencies who reached the bus accident early after it took place, the crash happened on the morning of Monday, August 19th, after the driver of the pickup truck failed to notice that the school bus had slowed down in order to navigate a turn.

Shortly before the accident, the school bus was headed down Dean Road. Behind the bus, the pickup truck was also traveling down Dean Road, and in the same direction. When the bus neared the intersection of Dean Road and Winder Road, the bus driver began to prepare to make the turn from Dean onto Winder. It is not confirmed, but it is believed that the driver of the bus activated their turn signals before making the turn, and that in all other ways obeyed the traffic laws in the area.

Unfortunately, the driver of the pickup truck failed to notice these signals. They also failed to notice that the bus had slowed considerably as it began to prepare to make its turn. As a result, the pickup truck slammed into the back of the bus. Thankfully, it appears as though the individual driving the pickup truck was not traveling at full speed when the collision took place. Pictures from the scene show the bus halted in the middle of its turn. Behind it sits the pickup truck – its front end smashed along the driver’s side.

At the time of the collision, 23 people, most of them students between the ages encapsulated by kindergarten and 8th grade, were aboard the bus. The reports from the emergency response crews indicated that several people aboard the bus suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash, however none of them required transportation to a medical center for treatment. The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident, although they were given a ticket for careless driving.

While troopers investigated the crash, a second bus came by and collected the students.
