One Critically Injured in Orange County after Collision with School Bus
On Thursday, August 30th, police working with the Florida Highway Patrol began to receive reports of an incident at the intersection of Pine Hills Road and Liming Avenue inside the town of Pine Hills within Orange County. Early reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that they were pulled to the scene in order to respond to an accident between a car and a school bus and a second car and a house that resulted in the car being stuck underneath the bus and at least one person suffering from critical injuries.
It was sometime between 10:00 and 10:30 at night when the incident that involved a 1997 Honda, a 2002 Acura, and a Orange County School Bus took place. Although the investigation into the incident remains underway, members of the FHP believe that the drivers of the Honda and the Acura were engaged in a rase along the southern lane of Pine Hills Road when they reached the above-mentioned intersection. A bus depot for Orange County school busses lies at this intersection, and at the time when the two drivers reached this area a bus was attempting to make a left turn outside of the depot and onto Pine Hills Road.
The Honda, being driven by a 19-year-old Orlando resident, collided with the left side of the school bus and became wedged underneath the much larger vehicle. The 19-year-old Orlando resident who was driving the Acura managed to swerve away from the bus, but the rate of speed at which they were traveling made it so that they were unable to retain control over their vehicle. The Acura left the roadway and wound up colliding with the side of a home located near to the intersection. Fortunately, the home was unoccupied at the time of the crash, but the car did cause some severe damage to one of the walls as it burst through the siding and into the home’s interior.
The driver of the Honda suffered from critical injuries as a result of the incident as was taken to Orlando Regional Medical center where they are currently receiving treatment. The 26-year-old bus driver was not injured in the crash.
While the investigation into the incident remains ongoing, we do know that charges have emerged for at least one of the drivers. The person behind the wheel of the Acura was arrested at the scene, and it is believed that charges will await the driver of the Honda if and when they recover from their injuries.
