Nine Injured After Lynx Bus Crashes, Overturns in Orlando
A bus accident that took place early in October on Interstate 4 resulted in the injury of at least nine individuals. Initial reports regarding the crash came from the Lynx bus service, one of whose fleet vehicles was involved in the accident. The reports from Lynx stated that the crash took place shortly before noon on Tuesday, October 1st. Only one vehicle was reportedly involved in the crash, a fact which likely drastically reduced the number of injuries which were sustained.
It was sometime close to 11:30 in the morning when a Lynx bus was traveling down Interstate 4, close to the place where this highway intersects with Orange Blossom Trail. The road at this time was still wet from a series of storms which had crossed over the area during the night and earlier morning. Additionally, the surface of the road changed from asphalt to concrete in this area, resulting in a jarring shift of road texture. It is not clear if this change in surface caused a slight shift or dip in the roadway, but it does seem that something in this area caused the bus to shift lanes suddenly, a factor which the driver attempted to fix by jerking the wheel. Unfortunately, this decision resulted in an over-correction. In the moments after this, the driver lost control of the vehicle, swerving back and forth across the road in a doomed attempt to regain supremacy over the large vehicle.
The bus, which was carrying passengers at this time, ultimately crashed into a concrete barrier and then flipped over onto its side. The force of the impact as well as the bus overturning resulted in injuries that were assessed when the emergency response teams reached the scene. It is not known how many people were aboard the bus at the time of the accident but according to the Orlando Fire Department at least nine of them were taken from the scene of the crash to nearby hospitals where they were treated for injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
An oil leak that resulted from the crash was cleaned up by a hazmat team that rushed to the area with the other first responders.
At the time of this writing, it is believed that an investigation remains underway into the reasons behind the crash. It is not known if any charges are currently pending.
