Nine Children Involved in Orange County School Bus Accident
At approximately 8:30 a.m. this past Friday, October 12th, an Orange County school bus that was driving its route and making its routinely morning pickups, was involved in a strange chain-reaction bus accident first with another vehicle, and then with a swimming pool.
The bus driver, 53-year-old Eddikson Pena, of Winter Park, was travelling westbound on Willowwood Street at the same time 25-year-old Yerica Cuevas, of Orlando, was driving her Jeep eastbound on the same street. Both drivers claim that the other veered into the oncoming path of their vehicle, causing the collision. The force of the crash redirected the path of the school bus in the direction of the Pine Hills residence adjacent to Rushwood Ct. and Willowwood St., where it crashed through a chainlink fence before taking a nosedive into their backyard swimming pool.
The nine students, who attend Magnolia School – an educational establishment “designed to serve students with severe to profound mental handicaps and who also have special medical or behavioral service needs,” were unharmed in the incident, although visibly upset & frightened throughout the entire ordeal. The homeowner assisted in the bus evacuation, helping the children through the rear emergency exit.
In addition to Orange County Fire & Rescue being contacted, Hazmat response teams were also dispatched to the scene of the accident, to the swimming pool specifically, as gasoline was seeping into the chlorinated water from the fuel line on the school bus itself. The driver of the Jeep was transported to a local hospital to receive medical assistance with non-serious injuries sustained in the crash.
