Four Children Injured in Brevard County School Bus Accident

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on May 23, 2019

At approximately 3 p.m. on May 21, 2019, a school bus from a West Melbourne elementary school was loaded up with students and headed out to its usual stops throughout the city when it was involved in an auto accident with another vehicle.

Just this past Tuesday afternoon, shortly after classes had been dismissed from Riviera Elementary, a school bus carrying 17 children home from their day was leaving a subdivision of houses near the 2300 block of Brookshire Circle when a parked car pulled out into its path, creating the collision. Emergency responders including Brevard County Fire and Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident.

Of the nearly twenty students aboard the bus at the time of the crash, four sustained injuries serious enough to require medical treatment and were subsequently transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. “Several kids complained of possible injury and were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons,” said West Melbourne Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Page in a statement to the media. A fifth child was also injured in the accident, however, they were not transported to the hospital and instead picked up by a family member. Students that were uninjured in the collision were transferred to a new bus and taken back to school where they were then released to their parents.

School bus accidents, although relatively uncommon, are oftentimes one of the most scariest types of collisions to occur, mainly due to the precious people that they are carrying. That, coupled with the fact that most school busses throughout the country are not equipped with safety belts or restraints to protect our children should an accident take place.
