Staying Safe in Florida this Labor Day Weekend
Celebrated every year on the first Monday of September, Labor Day was made a national holiday in 1894, and is “a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.”
Many people throughout the country take advantage of their 3-day weekend by spending it outdoors, and the great citizens of Florida are no exception. With our incredible beaches, rivers, and water parks, coupled with the fact that we often enjoy summer temperatures well into the fall, Floridians certainly have plenty of ways to celebrate that extra day off from work.
Oftentimes referred to as the “last day of Summer”, Labor Day revelers can typically be found doing a variety of outside activities, including grilling burgers & brats, to any number of watersports, such as swimming & boating. Soaking up the sunshine and spending time with family and friends is what it’s all about.
Here at the Law Offices of James O. Cunningham, P.A., we’d like to wish everyone a safe, happy, and fun Labor Day weekend. However, we know that unfortunately, accidents can happen, and when/if they do, we’re here to help.
Some of the different types of accidents that can occur while enjoying a bit of fun in the sun include boating accidents, swimming pool accidents (including slip & falls from slippery surfaces), and jet ski accidents, to name a few. According to the 2016 Boating Accidents Statistical Report released by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:
- Florida has the most registered boat & water vessel users in the country, with a whopping 931,450.
- There were 714 boating accidents on record for last year, with the most common cause for these incidents being a “collision with another vessel.”
- Of these accidents, drowning (40) topped the list as the number one cause of death.
- July saw the highest number of accidents on record, 96, and was also the most deadliest month of the year, with 8 fatalities.
