Jupiter Man Critically Injured in Boating Accident
James O. Cunningham and other Orlando personal injury lawyers would like to remind boaters to exercise extra care as we enter the heavy traffic season on Florida waterways. The following story illustrates the dangers of not taking boating safety seriously:
State, county and local police in Palm Beach County are looking for a boat operator who caused a boating accident that resulted in critical injuries for one of his passengers. Accident investigators say that the man they are looking for was piloting a 23-foot boat on the Intracoastal Waterway recently when it slammed into a lighted channel marker around 9:46 p.m.
The collision caused one of his passengers, a 26-year-old Jupiter man, to suffer critical head injuries. The victim was airlifted to St. Mary’s Medical Center after the accident, according to a spokesman from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC). FFWCC officials say the boat operator fled form the accident scene shortly after the accident and has not been located for questioning. The man for whom conservation officers are searching is a 21-year-old Jupiter man who investigators believe was under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. The injured man was one of five passengers on the boat that night, one of whom suffered minor injuries. The suspect is not the owner of the boat involved in the accident, and if anyone knows any information in connection with the accident, he or she is encouraged to contact the FFWCC or the local police department.
Despite public information campaigns, stepped-up enforcement and other methods aimed at reducing the number of boating accidents on Florida waterways, dozens of people are killed each year and hundreds more injured in Florida boating accidents. Many boat owners forget or ignore our state’s laws on drinking and boating and operate their watercraft while legally intoxicated. This negligent behavior endangers them, the passengers on their vessels and anyone in the water near them.
