Volusia County Airplane Accident Injures Two Elderly Men
Two Florida men suffered minor injuries over the weekend after the airplane they were travelling in experienced an unexpected engine problem, causing the pilot to make an emergency landing in a nearby field in DeLeon Springs this past Sunday afternoon.
In what was originally meant to be the “birthday present of a lifetime”, Herbert Weens, the 79-year-old pilot, gifted his buddy, Kenneth Brownell, who was turning 89 that day, a trip up in his Stol CH 750 light sport utility aircraft for a little aerial sightseeing. At approximately 3:30 p.m., while they were flying around Volusia County near Johnson Lake Road, the airplane began to suffer from an unknown engine malfunction. After exhausting all countermeasures, Weens decided that the best plan of action would be to land on the freshly plowed patch of land closest to them. After the initial touch down, the plane’s landing gear was damaged to the point where it then caused the aircraft to flip nose over end.
Witnesses to the aviation accident immediately contacted local emergency response teams, which promptly arrived on-scene. Local resident Karen Henry saw the plane as it was going down, and rushed over to the accident once the plane had come to a rest. “I looked over and it just kept going down, down, down and boom. I ran back home to get something to help the other gentleman,” she said. “He was stuck in his seat belt and we had to cut him out.”
Both men were transported to Florida Hospital Deland, both only suffering from minor injuries luckily. This aviation accident is currently under routine investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, a standard procedure employed by both agencies after every plane crash.
Aviation accidents, especially those involving small personal aircrafts, are typically far more deadly & devastating than the one mentioned in the story above.
