One Man Dead in Three-Vehicle Accident on Interstate 4

A three-vehicle crash on Interstate 4 near the St. Johns River Bridge has claimed the life of one man and injured a 23-year-old Deltona woman. According to a statement from the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatality was a 38-year-old Port Orange man. Troopers say the rear-end auto accident occurred around 1:15 a.m. on June 21 on I-4 on the Volusia-Seminole county line. The victim was driving his 1994 Jeep in the center lane when a 27-year-old Orange City man driving a 2001 Lexus approached from behind at a high rate of speed. Troopers say the man did not slow at all as he got closer to the victim and eventually slammed his Lexus into the rear of the victim’s Jeep.

The Deltona woman was unable to stop and crashed her 2006 Buick into the back of the Lexus. She reportedly suffered very serious injuries and was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Troopers are waiting for toxicology tests to confirm their suspicion that the driver of the Lexus was impaired at the time of the accident. They expect to file charges pending test results. He suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Interstate 4 is one of the most dangerous in the country for auto accidents. The high volume of traffic that travels on it each day is the single-largest contributing factor to this ignominious reputation. This busy highway is exponentially more dangerous when drivers engage in reckless, negligent behavior such as the following:

  • Speeding
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
  • Tailgating
  • Talking and texting on cell phones when driving
  • Other risky behavior that increases the risk of causing an auto accident

When people are injured in an auto accident, they often receive a call from the at-fault driver’s insurance company a day or two following the accident. Generally, the insurance representative offers a modest check in exchange for their signature. Signing anything without having it reviewed by an experienced Orlando personal injury attorney is a recipe for disaster as these documents usually prevent the injured person from seeking additional damages against the driver and his or her insurer.
